Detailed maps and descriptions of the cycle route

prepare your cycling outings along the canal des 2 mers by bike

Our website gives you all the information you need to prepare your cycling outings along the route.

In order to provide you with this information in digestible form, we have divided the route into five sections and 32 stages. This means you can easily find specific information at local level.

On each section page you will find:

An interactive map indicating the precise route and the types of tracks along the section (i.e. greenways, stretches shared with motorized traffic, provisional portions, links and so on) as well as information on specialist services on or near the route (bicycle-hire companies, stations, accommodation, tourist offices, etc).

On each stage page you will find details on:

- the level of difficulty involved

- an interactive map indicating the types of tracks along the stage and the specialist services available on or near the stage

- the variation in altitude along the stage

- a technical description of the stage

- practical information

- internet comments from cyclists who have tried out the stage

You can also download the route tracks in GPX. format and print out the route and detailed descriptions.

To locate the train stations along the cycle route, see the interactive maps of the sections and stages.

On regional TER trains, it is easy to transport your bike. On other types of train, there may be certain conditions for taking your bike on board which you need to bear in mind.

Signposting along the route

signposting of the canal des 2 mers à vélo

Specific signposting has been put in place in both directions along the route. Panels are also dotted along the route; some give details on specific distances.

Note that in the départements (French counties) of Aude and Hérault, the Canal du Midi UNESCO World Heritage Site listing means that there are restrictions on how the cycle route can be developed. For the moment, signposting in these counties is not continuous.

Specific signposting is being put up along the route:

You can purchase specific topoguides covering the Canal de Garonne and the Canal du Midi separately, although for the moment there is no single topoguide available covering the entire route along both canals.

Going via our website’s stage pages, you can print out the various stage maps.

You can also create your own scrapbook on the website to save information that interests you online, for example stages and accommodation.
